“Li’l Burt”
Cades Cove Cub, Great Smoky Mountains
by Steve Norris
The inspiration for this fun painting came from my good friend, Ron
Fly. He is the owner of Apple Tree Gallery in Gatlinburg, where my
art is sold to the public. He has a funny tale he loves to tell to
his younger customers (children of adult customers, actually) that
involve the adventures of a young black bear cub he named Burt that
used to play (in Ron’s rich imagination) near the gallery.
Notice the background colors of new-growth greens and yellows of
Smoky Mountain springtime trees and foliage. The red and pink
flowers in the foreground demonstrate the near-miniature size of
typical flowers that bloom this time of year. Everything the little
bear sees is a new discovery to him, and every hollow log and
groundhog den is reason for a new adventure. Butterflies are to be
chased and squirrels are to be annoyed by his boisterous curiosity.
You can be sure his mother is nearby to keep him out of the worst of
jams that little ones can get themselves into.
Steve has plans to turn out several more bear cub paintings in the
months ahead, and it is hoped that they will be best sellers at the
premier galleries where his art is sold.
